The ‘Casuals’ - homeless men who went from Workhouse to Workhouse were given basic shelter and food, separate from the main inmates in exchange for hard labour such as stone breaking or oakum picking. Some shelters used ropes for them to sleep over hence the expressions ‘hangover’ and ‘on the ropes’
