These jackets are created to give voice to the ‘jacket women’ of Gressenhall Workhouse, unmarried mothers who wore identifying garments as punishment from the 1830s until 1866, exploring themes of stigma, shame, and the institutional marking of ‘moral transgression’ in Victorian England. They are created using fine Japanese mulberry paper which I print on using monoprint and drypoint.
